A Guide to Forensic Document Examination Services

Whether it’s a disputed Will, a suspicious contract, or an anonymous letter, the answers often lie in the microscopic details. At QD Examiners, we provide solicitors, businesses and private clients with the scientific analysis needed to resolve these disputes, providing clear, impartial evidence for use in civil, criminal or internal investigations.

A forensic document examiner evaluates the features of handwriting, ink, paper and printing processes using scientific methods. The aim is to determine whether a document is genuine, altered or forged, and to provide clear, impartial evidence that can be relied upon in court.

For example, in a disputed will case, an expert may compare the signature on the will with known examples written over several years, assessing natural variation, line quality and pen movement to form an expert opinion.

What QD Examiners Can Assesss

Forensic document examination covers a wide range of enquiries, including:

  • Handwriting comparison – assessing whether two or more samples were written by the same person.

  • Signature verification – determining whether a signature is genuine, or a 'simulation' - where a forger has tried to slowly copy or trace a name.

  • Ink and paper assessment – identifying different inks or materials that may indicate additions or alterations.

  • Alteration detection – identifying erasures, overwriting, additions or substituted pages. For example, identifying where a '3' might have become an '8', or where pages have been substituted into a multi-page document.

  • Indented impression analysis (ESDA) – using ESDA to reveal 'invisible' writing impressions left on underlying sheets - sometimes the key to showing a document was backdated.

  • Printed and typed document examination – linking documents to specific printers or identifying inconsistencies.

These examinations often involve microscopes, specialised lighting, digital imaging and ESDA equipment to reveal features not visible to the naked eye.

How much does a forensic handwriting expert cost?

Fees vary depending on the nature of the case. Factors include:

  • Number of documents and the amount of comparison material

  • Complexity (e.g., disguised writing, multiple authors, poor‑quality copies)

  • Urgency and court deadlines

  • Whether court attendance is required

No two cases are exactly alike. When we provide a quote, we look at the number of documents, the quality of the copies (or originals) and any looming court deadlines. We believe in transparency, so we offer fixed-fee quotes for straightforward signature cases to ensure there are no surprises for you or your client.

Why Independence Matters

Forensic document examiners must remain impartial. An independent expert provides evidence based solely on scientific analysis, not on the interests of any party. This impartiality is essential for credibility in court.

Experienced experts also understand how to present findings clearly, explaining technical observations in a way that judges, juries and legal professionals can follow.

How to Make the Most of QD Examination Services

To ensure an efficient and accurate examination:

  • Provide all relevant documents, including originals where possible.

  • Clarify the purpose of the examination (e.g., authorship, authenticity, alteration).

  • Discuss timescales early, especially if court deadlines apply.

  • Confirm the reporting format, such as a Part 35 or CrimPR‑compliant report.

  • Ensure secure handling of sensitive material.

Clear communication at the outset helps streamline the process and ensures the examiner can provide the most reliable opinion.

Getting Started

Forensic document examination offers a robust, scientific approach to resolving disputes involving handwriting and documents. Whether you are dealing with a contested signature, suspected alteration or a complex document‑related issue, an independent expert can provide clarity and support fair decision‑making.
