Forensic Examination of Shredded and Altered Documents
At QDE we specialise in the complex reconstruction of shredded evidence and the detection of document tampering - from erasures and additions to page manipulation.

The QDE office is equipped with a Projectina Inspec 8s. This uses specialised light sources and filters to visualise differences between inks and other features of documents.
Detection of Document Tampering

Using advanced forensic imaging, we identify subtle signs of alteration that are invisible under normal light. Our offices are equipped with the Projectina Inspec 8s and a Video Spectral Comparator, which utilise specific light wavelengths and filters to expose differences in ink and paper.

We examine suspected documents for:

-
Page Manipulation: Identifying page removals or substitutions by examining staple holes and binding patterns.

-
Text Erasures: Detecting where original entries have been physically or chemically removed.

-
Unauthorised Additions: Distinguishing between different inks to identify text that was added to a document after it was originally signed.

Preserving the Evidence: All examinations are entirely non-destructive. Our lighting techniques allow us to reveal the information about the document without altering its original state.

Expert Reconstruction Services

Recovering information from shredded or torn paper requires a meticulous, staged approach. At QDE, we categorise fragments by type, such as print, handwriting, or paper colour, to systematically reassemble the original document.

Our Approach:

-
Non-Destructive Assembly: We use low-tack adhesive sheets to secure fragments, allowing for easy repositioning without damaging the evidence. Permanent fixing is never used without prior consultation.

-
Cross-Cut Shredding: While cross-cut shredding is significantly more complex, partial reconstructions can often provide vital intelligence and aid in wider investigations.

-
Physical Matching: We can also perform physical "fit" examinations, such as matching a torn edge to a specific notebook to prove the origin of a page.

How to Assist the Examination: To ensure the best possible result, please do not empty or disturb the layers within the shredder bin. Providing an example of the type of document expected (e.g., a company invoice or bank statement) can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of the reconstruction.
